Why Visit Mt. Baldy?
Mount San Antonio, better known as Mt. Baldy, is the tallest peak in Los Angeles County and one of Southern California’s most iconic mountain destinations. The area is known for dramatic alpine scenery, pine forests, waterfalls, rocky ridgelines, and cooler temperatures compared to the city below.
Mt. Baldy is popular year-round for:
- Hiking
- Scenic drives
- River and creek spots
- Backpacking
- Skiing in winter
- Photography
- Escaping the LA heat
The mountain reaches over 10,000 feet in elevation, so conditions can change quickly depending on the season.

Best Beginner-Friendly Things To Do in Mt. Baldy
Explore the Scenic River Spots
One of the best parts about visiting Mt. Baldy isn’t just the summit hikes — it’s the hidden river and creek areas throughout the canyon. These spots are perfect for relaxing, cooling off in summer, or having a picnic surrounded by mountains.
If you’re not ready for a strenuous summit hike, exploring the lower canyon is still incredibly rewarding and gives you beautiful mountain scenery without the extreme elevation gain.
Popular Mt. Baldy Hikes
Devil’s Backbone Trail
This is the famous route most people think of when they picture Mt. Baldy. The trail follows a dramatic ridgeline with sweeping mountain views the entire way.
It’s beautiful, but definitely not a beginner hike.
The full route is around 11 miles with roughly 4,000 feet of elevation gain and can take most hikers 6–9 hours depending on pace.
Important things to know:
- Start early
- Bring far more water than you think you need
- Weather changes quickly
- The trail is exposed with very little shade
- Snow and ice make this route dangerous in winter
San Antonio Falls
San Antonio Falls is one of the easiest and most rewarding stops in the area.
The waterfall is accessible from a short walk near the road and is perfect for:
- Families
- Casual visitors
- Quick scenic stops
- Photography
During spring and early summer, the waterfall is especially beautiful from snowmelt runoff.

What To Pack for Mt. Baldy
Even if you’re only doing shorter hikes, mountain conditions can be unpredictable.
Recommended essentials:
- Plenty of water
- Electrolytes
- Sun protection
- Layers for changing weather
- Good hiking shoes
- Trekking poles for steeper trails
- Snacks with carbs and electrolytes
Many experienced hikers strongly recommend starting early and bringing extra water, especially during warmer months.
Is Mt. Baldy Dangerous?
Mt. Baldy is beautiful, but it should absolutely be respected.
Every year hikers underestimate:
- The elevation
- Weather conditions
- Exposure on ridgelines
- Snow and ice in colder months
The Devil’s Backbone section especially can become dangerous in poor conditions. Winter ascents often require mountaineering equipment and experience.
For beginners, visiting during summer or early fall is usually the safest and most enjoyable option.
