Wondering if it’s worth stopping by Mariposa Grove while visiting Yosemite National Park? Here’s a firsthand recounting of my experience among the giant sequoias to help you decide if it deserves a spot on your itinerary.

When you first arrive at the Mariposa Grove parking lot, you’ll immediately notice a shuttle bus stop. Before you go, it’s important to check whether the Mariposa Grove Shuttle is running. Depending on the season, the shuttle may be closed due to winter conditions or wildfires, and planning ahead will save you some surprises.
When operating, the shuttle takes you from the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza (Big Trees parking area) to the start of the grove. If the bus is not in service, you should be prepared to walk about one mile each way just to reach the beginning of the trail. Once you’re at the grove itself, how far you continue is entirely up to you and your comfort level.

I highly recommend at least hiking to the Grizzly Giant if you’re capable. Located about a mile from the shuttle drop-off, this massive tree delivers that jaw-dropping feeling you can only get from standing beneath a mature giant sequoia. The Grizzly Giant’s limbs were massive, easily wider than a car. Being underneath it really makes you feel the incredible size of these ancient sequoias.

Along the way to the Grizzly Giant, you’ll pass several other must-see trees, including the Fallen Monarch, Bachelor and Three Graces, and the iconic California Tunnel Tree. The Fallen Monarch’s gnarled roots make for a unique photo opportunity, while walking through the California Tunnel Tree really drives home just how enormous these trees are.
As you can probably tell, I had a wonderful time exploring Mariposa Grove. If you’re on the fence about visiting, I would absolutely say it’s worth the stop. If I were to go again, I’d plan for a longer hike to explore the quieter areas deeper in the grove. Until then, remember to have fun, be safe, and if you do end up visiting Mariposa Grove, I’d love for you to comment and share your experience.
