Exploring the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park

Wondering if it’s worth it to stop by Mariposa Grove while visiting Yosemite National Park? Here is a recounting of my experience amongst the giant sequoias to help you decide.

When you first arrive at the Mariposa Grove parking lot you’ll notice a bus stop. Make sure you check before you go whether or not the bus is running so you can plan accordingly. Depending on the season, the Mariposa Shuttle will be closed due to winter conditions or wildfires and you’ll want to be prepared if that happens to be the case. This shuttle takes you from the Big Tree parking lot to the beginning of the Grove. When the bus is not in service, you’ll have to walk the mile there and the mile back. Once you’re at the beginning of the grove, how far you go from there is up to you.

I highly recommend at least going to the Grizzly Giant if you’re capable. About a mile from the bus stop, this tree will satiate your craving for that jaw-dropping feeling you can only get from standing beneath a mature sequoia. Some of the limbs on that thing looked to be wider than a car!

Some other trees to see on the way to the Grizzly Giant include the Fallen Monarch, the Bachelor and Three Graces, and the iconic California Tunnel Tree. Pose by the gnarled roots of the Fallen Monarch for a unique pic or walk through the California Tunnel Tree to really feel the epic size of these majestic trees.

As you can see, I had wonderful time exploring the Mariposa Grove! If you’re on the fence, I would say it is definitely worth the stop. Were I to go again, I would probably plan for a longer hike to explore the many trees that reside further on in this mystical grove. Until then, just remember to have fun, be safe, and if you end up visiting the grove, I would love for you to comment below to share your experience.
